An Introduction to Symptom Management and Supportive Care

Kidney Health Australia has published a patient booklet on Symptom Management and Supportive Care. Symptom burden in kidney failure is substantial and is considered to be more than what people with terminal cancer experience. The booklet is designed for all people with advanced stages of chronic (and end stage) kidney disease and their family members. It is suitable for many people - those who are receiving dialysis and also for those who may never need or want to start dialysis. It explains common symptoms which require good symptom control and also advance care planning. Healthcare professionals also ought to read it as it will assist them to understand why good symptom management is needed when renal function has deteriorated.
